    TOLEDO, OH
    – Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that Karl E. Strauss, Associate in the Health Law Practice Group in the Toledo office, will be presented with the Ohio State Bar Foundation Community Service Award for District 4 for his outstanding service to the community. Mr. Strauss is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, District 4, which encompasses Lucas, Ottawa and Sandusky counties. He will be honored at the Ohio State Bar Association’s annual district meeting on October 6, 2009.

    The Community Service Award recognizes attorneys aged 40 or younger who contribute substantial time and effort to a local social service or a local civic, artistic or cultural organization. The service must be outside the recipient’s practice of law and must be given without compensation. Recipients should represent the ideals of the legal profession, be a credit to the profession and enjoy a fine professional reputation.

    The Ohio State Bar Foundation is a 501(c)3 public charity that works to advance the law and build a better justice system. Through grants and programs, they educate and perform outreach to the public to make the law fair for all Ohioans.

    Mr. Strauss is very active in the community. He is a member of the Steering Committee for Healthcare Heroes and he mentors the Student Health Law Organization at the University of Toledo College of Law. He also tutors elementary school students in the community and is an assistant coach with the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club swim team. Mr. Strauss is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, as well as the Toledo, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations and is serving as Secretary of the Toledo Bar Association's Young Lawyers Committee for 2009-2010.

    Mr. Strauss earned his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Toledo in 2006, where he also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, and his B.A., magna cum laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2003.
