TAMPA, FL – Erin Smith Aebel, Mark Allan Connolly, Partners in the Tampa Office, and A. Edward McGinty, Of Counsel in the Tampa Office, spoke to the University of South Florida medical school residents on December 8, 2009. Ms. Aebel discussed health law compliance, Mr. Connolly spoke about avoiding medical malpractice claims and malpractice basics, and Mr. McGinty’s topic was contract negotiations. Attorneys from Shumaker frequently have made similar presentations annually for the USF residents.

Ms. Aebel’s principal areas of practice are business law and regulatory compliance including fraud and abuse, Stark, HIPAA and licensure. Ms. Aebel’s clients include physicians, dentists, chiropractors, hospitals, medi-spas, pharmacies, diagnostic imaging centers and other health care providers. Ms. Aebel received her J.D., cum laude, from Loyola University and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Loyola University. Ms. Aebel is AV® Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is Board Certified as a Health Law Specialist by the Florida Bar.

Mr. Connolly serves as the City Attorney for the City of Temple Terrace, Florida, and as general counsel to child welfare agencies in the Tampa Bay area and Southwest Florida. He has extensive experience representing individuals, businesses and governmental entities in commercial, tort and real estate litigation. He also has extensive experience in representing governmental clients, including handling public meetings, negotiating contracts and interlocal agreements, and providing general legal advice and counseling on matters such as the Sunshine Law, Public Records Law, and ethics for public officials. Mr. Connolly also has successfully represented health care providers in various litigation matters, and he has substantial experience in the enforcement of restrictive covenants. Mr. Connolly is AV® Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Connolly received his J.D. from Stetson University College of Law and his B.S. from the University of Florida.

Mr. McGinty has extensive experience in corporate, LLC and partnership, real estate, complex business and medical practice transactions, contracts, tax and estate planning and asset protection, including mergers and acquisitions, business & medical practice transfers, ownership structure, succession planning and transfer restriction agreements, corporate and real estate finance and development, construction and project insurance, professional & executive compensation planning, employment agreements and termination. He is frequently involved in the structuring of a variety of transactions and contracts to satisfy tax and financing objectives. Mr. McGinty received his J.D., with honors, from Florida State University and his B.A. from Louisiana State University.
