Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick Attorney Receives Award From Canada’s Governor General

Professionals: Andrew L. McIntosh

TAMPA, Fla. — Canada’s Governor General recently presented a prestigious award to attorney Andrew L. McIntosh from the full-service business law firm Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP.

McIntosh received the Governor General’s Visit Medallion, which is awarded to people and organizations that have contributed extraordinarily to the development of international trade, investment and cultural exchange. Past recipients of the Visit Medallion include Canadian ambassadors, a former United States ambassador to Canada, leaders in academic, political and business spheres, and institutions focused on enhancing Canada-U.S. relations.

From 2005 to 2012, McIntosh served as Honorary Consul of Canada for Florida, and for the past four years, he has continued to keep the Florida-Canada relationship strong, advancing connections for Canada particularly in the Tampa Bay area, but across the state as well.

McIntosh traveled to Miami, a city that is home to a Consulate General of Canada, to accept the award from Governor General David Johnston, the head of state and Commander-in-Chief for Canada, a position appointed by Queen Elizabeth II.

“Having the opportunity to work with the Consulate General and to serve people doing business on both sides of the border is reward enough for me,” McIntosh said. “I was quite humbled to both lend assistance and receive the award.”

McIntosh grew up in Ontario, Canada, and went to university and law school in the province. He practiced law there before attending law school in the United States and practicing law in Tampa, a move he made 25 years ago.

“Canada is one of the most significant trade partners that Florida and the Tampa Bay area have,” McIntosh said. “This relationship is very important – one that we must foster and build on.”

With Shumaker, McIntosh advises individuals and businesses on corporate, mergers and acquisitions, trade, franchising and distribution, debt financing, joint ventures and commercial matters.  As a member of the Ontario and Florida bars and as a member of Shumaker’s international practice group, he provides representation to clients involved in cross-border business and commercial activities globally.

“The firm has always supported my efforts and has afforded me freedom and latitude to provide assistance in support of Canada-U.S. trade and investment,” McIntosh said. “Shumaker values engagement by its lawyers in the local community and beyond. My receipt of the medallion is a reflection of that perspective, and the firm should be credited with creating a culture and environment in which members of the firm are encouraged to use their skills and relationships for the betterment of the community.”
