Title IX

Shumaker’s team of experienced counsel advises our clients on important issues related to Title IX, which prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational institutions and programs that receive federal funds.  While many know about Title IX as it relates to gender equity in athletics, this complex law applies more broadly and covers a wide range of issues, including sex-based harassment and violence in public and private schools.

We assist schools at the primary, secondary and collegiate levels to ensure they comply with all requirements of Title IX and reduce their risk in this area by developing a comprehensive approach to managing these issues.

What Makes Us Different?

The diverse experience of our team is what distinguishes Shumaker’s Title IX practice.  Marissa Pollick, Chair of the Firm’s Title IX practice, has more than 30 years’ experience as a litigator, including Title IX litigation in federal courts.  Since 2004, she has also taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Michigan in Sports Law, Race and Gender Discrimination in Sport, and Sport and Public Policy, with emphasis on Title IX law and compliance.  Her substantial experience working with schools and universities on Title IX investigations, athletic compliance, and litigation is supported by our firm’s strong Labor and Employment practice  and Sports Law practice.  Marissa and  Shumaker attorney Dana Drew Shaw are also former student-athletes at the University of Michigan and the University of Toledo, respectively, with significant first-hand knowledge and experience about equity concerns in intercollegiate athletics.
